The Donald O. Warthen, Jr. Fund and Best Paper Award

Donald Warthen was a vibrant student in the INCC program and taught courses in MLLI for several years before he passed away suddenly in 1992. The MLLI department launched a University of Maryland Foundation account in his honor to keep his memory and curiosity for learning alive.

The fund currently pays out a modest monetary award to one graduate student per academic year: MLLI professors select the best research paper from each of their core courses in the INCC program (MLL 601, 602, 603, and 602) and submit them to two other MLLI professors for evaluation and suitability for the Best Paper Award. Deadline for paper submission is Dec. 31st for papers written during the previous two semesters. The Best Paper Award is announced on Feb. 1st of the next calendar year. For information on how to apply, or to make a donation to the fund, please contact the Graduate Program Director.
