The Department of Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication (MLLI) houses the Center for the Advancement of Intercultural Communication (C.A.I.C.) that focuses on intercultural and diversity sensitivity training, research and pedagogy in intercultural communication, and outreach and dissemination in these areas of activity. Created in 2011, C.A.I.C. builds on the University’s mission statement of dedication to “cultural and ethnic diversity” and “social responsibility” and extend campus efforts and intercultural dialogues in order to provide a permanent focus for intercultural interaction among faculty, staff, and students. It encourages and supports significant initiatives to produce thoughtful dialogue, balanced debate, common ground, and civility in a variety of contexts. Additionally, C.A.I.C. fosters and executes research, curricular development, and outreach on these issues.
Principal Areas of Focus:
●Intercultural and diversity sensitivity training initiatives at UMBC and in the greater Baltimore/DC region
●Research and pedagogy in intercultural communication: this includes peer-reviewed articles and books on these issues, as well as new teaching curricula and production of instructional materials
●Outreach and dissemination: conferences, workshops, and symposia at UMBC and in the region related to these topics
