Japanese Major Track Options

Major in Language and Cultural Studies concentration – Japanese track (39 credits)

• 12 credits of core courses: MLL/LING/ENGL 190, MLL/LING/ENGL 191, MLL/LING 230, MLL 301, MLL 305 (Note: All core courses must be taken at UMBC)


12 credits upper-level courses in Japanese:

JPNS 301   Advanced Japanese I   [Fall semester]

JPNS 302  Advanced Japanese II   [Spring semester]

JPNS 309  Business Japanese       [Fall semester]

JPNS 319  Japanese Translation   [Spring semester]

• 15 elective credits, nine of which must be at the 300 or 400 level, in MLL, LING and/or modern language courses as part of a major program designed in consultation with a departmental advisor. Up to two appropriate courses from other disciplines may be applied to the major with written approval of the student’s advisor. Possible courses:

MLL 316  Japanese Language in Society    [Fall semester odd year]

MLL 317  Images of Society in Contemporary Japanese Films [Fall semester even year]

MLL 327  Modern Japanese Culture   [Spring semester odd year]

MLL 333  Japanese Food Culture   [Spring semester even year]

and/or other Japan related courses.

 

Major in Two-language concentration (Japanese as the secondary language) (39 credits)

• 9 credits of core courses: MLL/LING/ENGL 190, MLL/LING 230, MLL 301 MLL 305 (Note: All core courses must be taken at UMBC)
22 credits required by a primary language
• 12 credits upper-level courses in Japanese: JPNS 301, 302, 309, 319
