Two-Language concentration

The Two-Language concentration consists of a primary language (French, German, Russian, or Spanish) and twelve credits of a second language (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish) above 202, in the following combinations:

  • French (primary) with one of the following languages as secondary: Arabic, Chinese, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian, or Spanish (42 credits)
  • German (primary) with one of the following languages as secondary: Arabic, Chinese, French, Japanese, Korean, Russian, or Spanish (43 credits)
  • Russian (primary) with one of the following languages as secondary: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, or Spanish (42 credits)
  • Spanish (primary) with one of the following languages as secondary: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, or Russian (43 credits)

The program requirements (below) vary from 42 to 43 credits, and include a shared interdisciplinary core of courses, which provides a grounding in essential issues of human communication and social context.  Note that core courses MLL 230 and 301 must be taken at UMBC, and that all courses applied to the major requirements must be completed with a grade of C or higher.

Primary Language  – French

•  9 credits of core courses: MLL/LING/ENGL 190, MLL/LING 230 or MLL 305, MLL 301
•  6 credits: FREN 301, 302
•  12 credits foundation courses: FREN 310, 320, 330, 340
•  3 credits of elective FREN courses at the 400 level
•  12 credits in a second language above 202, taught in the target language

Primary Language  – German

•  9 credits of core courses: MLL/LING/ENGL 190, MLL/LING 230 or MLL 305, MLL 301
•  13 credits: GERM 202, 301, 302, 303
•  6 credits, chosen from GERM 309 (or 310), 375, and 421
•  3 credits: elective German courses at the 300 or 400 level
•  12 credits in a second language above 202, taught in the target language

Primary Language  – Russian

Note: the following program changes will take effect with the 2024-25 Undergraduate Catalog:

•  9 credits of core courses: MLL/LING/ENGL 190, MLL/LING 230 or MLL 305, MLL 301
•  9 credits chosen from RUSS 301, 302, 401, 402
•  12 credits: elective Russian courses at the 300 or 400 level; up to two 200- or 300-level MLL courses, chosen in consultation with the student’s advisor, may substitute for RUSS electives. Note that RUSS 350 is a one-credit course designed to be taken in three successive semesters, each paired with a different level of RUSS 202 through 302. The course may be taken for a total of 3 credits as the sequence is completed.
•  12 credits in a second language above 202, taught in the target language

Primary Language  – Spanish

•  9 credits of core courses: MLL/LING/ENGL 190, MLL/LING 230 or MLL 305, MLL 301
•  13 credits upper-level courses: SPAN 202; 301 or 304; 302 or 305; 307 or 308
•  3 credits: SPAN 311 or 312
•  6 credits: elective SPAN courses at the 300 or 400 level
•  12 credits in a second language above 202, taught in the target language
