One-Language concentration

MLLI offers a Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration (major) in each of four languages:

The program requirements (below) vary from 40 to 43 credits, and include a shared interdisciplinary core of courses, which provides a grounding in essential issues of human communication and social context.  Note that core courses MLL 230 and 301 must be taken at UMBC, and that all courses applied to the major requirements must be completed with a grade of C or higher.

 

One Language: French Concentration (42 credits)

•  9 credits: MLL/LING/ENGL 190, MLL/LING 230 or MLL 305, MLL 301
•  6 credits: FREN 301, 302
•  12 credits Foundation Courses: FREN 310, 320, 330, 340
•  3 credits Experiential Learning: FREN 399
•  6 credits of elective FREN courses at the 300 or 400 level
•  6 credits of elective FREN courses at the 400 level

Up to 15 transfer credits may be applied to the major requirements, but at least two 400-level FREN courses must be taken at UMBC. Credit by exam for FREN 301 and 302 counts towards the 15 transfer credits allowed.

One Language: German Concentration (40 credits); choose from Track A or Track B:

TRACK A:  Cultural Studies concentration – Germany then and now

•  9 credits: MLL/LING/ENGL 190, MLL/LING 230 or MLL 305, MLL 301
•  16 credits: GERM 202, 301, 302, 315, 401
•  9 credits Cultural Studies courses: GERM 303, 375, 481
•  6 credits of elective GERM courses at the 300 and 400 level. One of these 2 courses can be an MLL course or from a discipline outside of MLLI. Any course from the Advanced Language Study track is also permissible. Recommended: GERM 420, 421 or MLL 332

TRACK B:  Advanced language study – Intercultural and Professional Communication and Globalization

•  9 credits: MLL/LING/ENGL 190, MLL/LING 230 or MLL 305, MLL 301
•  16 credits: GERM 202, 301, 302, 315, 401
•  9 credits Advanced Language Study courses: GERM 303, 310, 420
•  6 credits of elective GERM courses at the 300 and 400 level. One of these 2 courses can be an MLL course or from a discipline outside of MLLI. Any course from the Cultural Studies track is also permissible. Recommended: GERM 309, 319, 481, MLL 305

One Language: Russian Concentration (40 credits)

Note: the following program changes will take effect with the 2024-25 Undergraduate Catalog:

•  9 credits: MLL/LING/ENGL 190, MLL/LING 230 or MLL 305, MLL 301
•  10 credits: RUSS 202, 301, 302
•  6 credits: RUSS 401, 402
•  15 credits of elective RUSS courses at the 300 or 400 level; up to two 200- or 300-level MLL courses, chosen in consultation with the student’s advisor, may substitute for RUSS electives.  Note that RUSS 350 is a one-credit course designed to be taken in three successive semesters, each paired with a different level of RUSS 202 through 302. The course may be taken for a total of 3 credits as the sequence is completed.

One Language: Spanish Concentration (43 credits)

•  9 credits: MLL/LING/ENGL 190, MLL/LING 230 or MLL 305, MLL 301
•  22 credits: SPAN 202, 301, 302, 307, 308, 311 (offered in Spring), 312 (offered in Fall)
•  6 credits: SPAN 401, 421 (note: SPAN 401 is the capstone course for the major, and must be taken at UMBC.  400-level courses require a term paper or equivalent written assignment)
•  6 credits of elective SPAN courses at the 300 or 400 level

It is highly recommended you take SPAN 308 before or concurrently with SPAN 312 and SPAN 307 before or concurrently with SPAN 311.
