MLLI and the Study Abroad Office celebrated “50 Years of Language and Culture Studies at UMBC and Abroad” on September 16, 2016. The three-hour event brought together about 130 people, including departmental alumni, retired faculty, and current students.
The evening began with a performance of Korean dance and drumming and continued with a story-sharing session in which seven alumni with graduation dates from 1983 to 2013 presented their career paths, along with an intercultural challenge that each had faced.
A reception in the new MLLI spaces gave everyone the opportunity to reconnect while enjoying ethnic foods. A brief history of MLLI was given by Dr. Jack Sinnigen, and two video presentations were on view throughout the evening, one a series of photographs of MLLI faculty and students in the past and the other a set of video greetings from alumni around the world.
