Russian Programs Offered

We currently offer the following:

One Language Option: Russian Concentration (40 credits)

Note: the following program changes will take effect with the 2024-25 Undergraduate Catalog:

•  9 credits: MLL/LING/ENGL 190, MLL/LING 230 or MLL 305, MLL 301
•  10 credits: RUSS 202, 301, 302
•  6 credits: RUSS 401, 402
•  15 credits of elective RUSS courses at the 300 or 400 level; up to two 200- or 300-level MLL courses, chosen in consultation with the student’s advisor, may substitute for RUSS electives.  Note that RUSS 350 is a one-credit course designed to be taken in three successive semesters, each paired with a different level of RUSS 202 through 302. The course may be taken for a total of 3 credits as the sequence is completed.

Two Language Option: Russian Concentration (42 credits)

Note: the following program changes will take effect with the 2024-25 Undergraduate Catalog:

•  9 credits of core courses: MLL/LING/ENGL 190, MLL/LING 230 or MLL 305, MLL 301
•  9 credits chosen from RUSS 301, 302, 401, 402
•  12 credits: elective Russian courses at the 300 or 400 level; up to two 200- or 300-level MLL courses, chosen in consultation with the student’s advisor, may substitute for RUSS electives. Note that RUSS 350 is a one-credit course designed to be taken in three successive semesters, each paired with a different level of RUSS 202 through 302. The course may be taken for a total of 3 credits as the sequence is completed.
•  12 credits in a second language above 202, taught in the target language

Language and Cultural Studies: Russian Concentration (39 credits)

•  12 credits of core courses, chosen from: MLL/LING/ENGL 190, MLL/LING/ENGL 191, MLL/LING 230, MLL 301, MLL 305
•  
12 credits upper-level courses: RUSS 301, 302 and two courses chosen from RUSS 321, 401, 402 or another Russian elective.
•  15 elective credits, chosen from offered Russian language courses.  Up to two courses relevant to RUSS studies may be applied with the approval of the Russian advisor. Note that RUSS 350 is a one-credit course designed to be taken in three successive semesters, each paired with a different level of RUSS 202 through 302. The course may be taken for a total of 3 credits as the sequence is completed.

Certificate in Russian Studies (17 credits)

Note: the following program changes will take effect with the 2024-25 Undergraduate Catalog:

Certificate required courses:

•  RUSS 201
•  RUSS 202
•  RUSS 301

Certificate electives (choose two):

• MLL 270: Introduction to Russian Culture and Civilization
• MLL 271: Introduction to Modern Russian Civilization and Culture
• MLL 370: 19th-Century Russian Literature and Society
• MLL 371: 20th-Century Russian Literature and Politics

• Any RUSS course(s) above RUSS 301. Note that RUSS 350 is a one-credit course designed to be taken in three successive semesters, each paired with a different level of RUSS 202 through 302. The course may be taken for a total of 3 credits as the sequence is completed.

NOTE: At least three courses for the Russian Certificate requirements must be taken at UMBC.

Minor in Russian (22 Credits)

•  3 credits: one MLL core course: MLL/LING/ENGL 190, MLL/LING/ENGL 191, MLL/LING 230, MLL 301, MLL 305
•  10 credits: RUSS 202, 301, 302
•  9 credits of RUSS courses at the 300 or 400 level; up to two 200- or 300-level MLL courses, chosen in consultation with the student’s advisor, may substitute for RUSS electives. Note that RUSS 350 is a one-credit course designed to be taken in three successive semesters, each paired with a different level of RUSS 202 through 302. The course may be taken for a total of 3 credits as the sequence is completed.

Students are encouraged to consider combining a minor in Russian with a major in History, Computer Science, Economics, Political Science, or a minor in International Affairs.
